Airdrie Fire Department

hero-featured

The Project

The City of Airdrie undertook the Chinook Winds Stations and Fire Headquarters—using the principles of LEED design and construction—and achieved certification as a Silver Shadow project. The design featured large areas of glazing to reduce the use of artificial lighting and passively heat the complex, while creating an aesthetically pleasing and architecturally unique facade. They engaged All Weather Windows COMMERCIAL to ensure the successful completion of the many key glazing systems.

The Process

Starting in late 2010, All Weather Windows COMMERCIAL provided the vital project management support for the timely and efficient fabrication and installation of the various commercial aluminium window and door systems.

Stairwell Curtainwall

In keeping with the requirements of the Silver LEED certification, a floor-to-ceiling Kawneer series 1600 system 1 curtainwall floods the stairwell with natural light. The Low E insulating glass, combined with a light bronze tint, reduces the heat buildup during the summer months and increases insulating properties to help retain heat in the winter.

Entrances

The exterior entrances were designed using Kawneer Insulclad 560 series thermally broken doors. They were installed into 1600 series system 1 curtainwall framing to ensure maximum durability, efficiency and continuity in design.

Clerestory Windows

Supporting the reduced requirements for artificial lighting, series 518 Isoport clerestory windows by Kawneer were employed to provide maximum glass-to-frame ratios. These were installed above the overhead doors to flood the vehicle storage areas with natural lighting.

The Challenges

Integrating multiple forms of building materials and finishes created a unique set of challenges.

Horizontal Sightlines

Maintaining horizontal sightlines across multiple product lines and construction materials required skilled work by the Calgary All Weather Windows COMMERCIAL team, and was achieved in close coordination with the architect and general contractor.

Curtainwall Integration

This curtainwall window required All Weather Windows COMMERCIAL to integrate with and accommodate unique architectural finishes and features, such as the soffit ceiling panels and fascia valance which appears to fit seamlessly into the window.
